Professor For a day Reflection

After listening to Mr. Mittas speak in class on Thursday, there were many bits of professional knowledge to takeaway. He first mentioned that he got his job at Roberts Express (FedEx) on a whim. A key aspect during his presentation was that he was always ready for anything, and that showed from the interview he got the day he turned in his application. It was also evident that he was ready for anything with the positions he held during his career. Another key takeaway from Mr. Mittas’ presentation was his ability to make executive style decisions based on the problems he was facing with a customer. I think this point he made during his speech made everyone feel empowered. Knowing that it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission is a great way of telling someone to do what they feel is best. Both for the company they are working for and the customer they are attending to. The last key takeaway I gained from his speech was that as an employee you have to gain as much knowledge from the position you currently hold, because you never know where that knowledge can take you during your next position or job you take. Mr. Mittas made it very clear that after taking a new position within FedEx all of his past knowledge relayed to the new job he had.

They things I learned from Mr. Mittas that I plan on implementing ultimately come from the key takeaways I gained from the speech. That being I plan on gaining as much information from one certain job and implementing those skills to the next. That point also applies to the thought of never stopping the learning process during whatever job I take. Another point from the presentation I plan on implementing would be to just go with your gut. Do what you feel is the best for the situation at hand, if it doesn’t work, apologize, fix your mistake and move on. Nobody is perfect and mistakes are a key aspect of the learning process. The last point I plan on implementing would be to always expect the unexpected. Mr. Mittas spoke on how he was given an interview on the same day he filled out the application. He wasn’t ready for it, but did the best he could with the tools he had at the time. I think “expecting the worst and hoping for the best” is a great mindset because it keeps you prepared and ready for whatever life had to through at you.

Overall I though the presentation was very knowledgable. Mr. Mittas spoke on his unconventional career path and how he has navigated his way through. I think there were a ton of other knowledgable bits he gave to us as a class, but these were the ones that really spoke to me.
